Why the anchor matters more than the bar

A grab bar is only as good as what it is screwed into. A bar that looks fine and pulls out of the wall when someone slips is worse than no bar, because it was trusted. So every bar goes into wall studs or solid blocking behind the wall, never just drywall or tile.

We find the framing first, then fit the bar to it. On tile, we drill with a bit made for tile, slowly and with care, so the tile does not crack. The holes get sealed where the bar passes through so water stays out of the wall. After mounting, we pull on each bar hard before we call it done. Suction-cup bars are fine for steadying a hand, but they are not a substitute for an anchored bar.

Handrails, stair rails and smoke detectors

Handrails and stair rails follow the same rule: brackets go into framing. They are billed at the hourly rate of $85, and a few bars and a rail often fit together in one visit. We can also swap old battery-powered smoke detectors or add new ones while we are there. Hard-wired detectors are electrical work, and we will refer you to a licensed electrician for those.

What we will tell you before we drill

If there is no framing where a bar needs to go, we say so up front. Usually a different position or a longer bar that reaches two studs solves it. If not, we talk through options before any hole is drilled. Fiberglass tub surrounds with a hollow back need a specific mounting method, so we quote those from photos.

We do not make medical or accessibility-compliance claims. If you are not sure where bars should go for the person using them, ask your doctor or occupational therapist first. Then we mount them where they said, into something solid.

The process

How A Grab Bars and Handrails Job Goes

  1. Text us the wall

Send a photo of the shower, tub or toilet wall and tell us what the wall is made of, if you know. Mark where you want each bar.

  2. A firm price first

You get a written price before we book. If we cannot tell from photos whether framing is there, we say so in the quote.

  3. Anchor and test

We find framing, drill and mount each bar, seal it, then pull on it hard before anyone has to rely on it.

  4. Photo report

Before and after photos go in your report, and we do a free 5 minute roof and exterior check while we are there.

Questions

Grab Bars and Handrails Questions

How much does it cost to install a grab bar in Yukon?

The first grab bar is $129 and each added bar on the same visit is $69, labor only, mounted into studs or solid blocking. Handrails and stair rails are billed hourly. You get the total in writing before we book, from photos of the walls.

What if there is no stud where I want the bar?

We tell you before we drill. Often a small shift in position, or a longer bar that reaches two studs, puts the bar where it can hold. If neither works, we talk through the options with you. We do not hang a safety bar on drywall anchors and hope.

Will drilling crack my shower tile?

Tile cracks when it is drilled too fast or with the wrong bit. We use a bit made for tile, start slowly and keep it cool. Every hole is sealed where the bar passes through so water cannot get behind the tile.

Where should grab bars go?

It depends on the person using them and how they move. We can mount wherever you choose, but we do not give medical or accessibility advice. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or an occupational therapist where bars should go, then send us their notes.

Can you install a grab bar on a fiberglass tub surround?

Often, yes, but many fiberglass surrounds have a hollow space behind them, and they need a specific mounting method. Send photos of the surround and the wall around it. We quote it from those photos instead of the flat rate.
