Test first, scrape second

Some sprayed popcorn texture contains asbestos. The EPA banned spray-applied asbestos surfacing in 1978, but stock that was already made kept getting used. If the home was built before 1980 or you do not know when the ceiling went up, a sample goes to a lab before we bring in a scraper.

We wet a small patch in a closet or corner, take a sample about the size of a quarter and send it to a lab. You get the written result. If it is positive, we stop. Removing asbestos texture is abatement work, and in Oklahoma it must be done by a licensed contractor. The Oklahoma Department of Labor issues that license. We refer you to one and can return afterward to skim and prime the bare ceiling.

How the ceiling comes down

A clean test means we can book the job. Each room is emptied as far as possible, and what stays is wrapped in plastic. The floor is sheeted, the walls are masked from the ceiling line down, and the doorway is sealed.

Then the texture is soaked with a garden sprayer and left to soften. Wet texture comes off in sheets with a wide scraper and most of it lands on the plastic, not in the air. Once the drywall is bare we set any popped nails, fill the gouges and skim the whole ceiling with joint compound. After it dries, it is sanded, dusted and primed, ready for paint.
